Charged soft matter, including polymers, colloids, hydrogels, etc., is awash with fascinating examples that exist in daily life, such as food, soft tissues, and cosmetics. Most of the charged systems exhibit very complex dynamical properties, which are entirely different from their uncharged analogs. Due to the simultaneous presence of several long-ranged interactions from electrostatics, chain connectivity, and hydrodynamics, a fundamental understanding of these charged soft matter materials continues to be a huge challenge.
Research in my laboratory will address this challenge by utilizing molecular design and self-assembly of microscopic/mesoscopic building blocks to elucidate new physical effects arising from the interplay between material structure, dynamics, phase behaviors, and performance under stimuli from the molecular level up to the macroscopic level. The new principles will guide me to create desired functional materials that address specific problems in energy materials, energy storage, biomaterials, healthcare, and environmental science.
